Janaka Gunaratne and Hasantha Fernando led Basnahira South’s recovery with a 121 runs stand for the seventh wicket helping the side to end on a respectable 224 against Basnahira North on day one of the Bank of Ceylon Inter-Provincial four day match played at De Soysa Stadium in Moratuwa.

Janaka made an unbeaten 98 from 127 balls which included 11 boundaries and two sixes taking his side out of the woods when they were struggling with five of their top batsmen back in the pavilion with just 39 runs on the board.

Later in the innings he added another useful 34 runs for the ninth wicket with Chinthaka Perera. The early damage was done by right arm pacies Dhamika Prasad, Daminda Dharshanapriya and Nuwan Pradeep who grabbed two wickets each while right arm spinner Sachitra Serasinghe finished off the tail with a four wicket haul. Basnahira North in their turn was given a rousing start by openers Dilshan Munaweera and Dimuth Karunaratne who together put on 94 runs before they were separated.

But Munaweera continued to torment the Basnahira South bowlers by adding 48 runs for the second wicket with Sachitra Serasinghe and an unbroken stand of 38 with Kaushal Silva enabling Ruhuna to end the day on 182 for 2. Munaweera remained unbeaten on 116 coming off just 89 balls which has 18 boundaries and a six.

Chandimal leads Ruhuna’s bold reply
Dinesh Chandimal celebrated his inclusion to the World Cup squad with a fine knock of 70 as he led Hirdramani Ruhuna’s bold reply of 173 for 4 in reply to Wayamba’s 161 at the end of the first day’s play in the Bank of Ceylon Inter-Provincial four day encounter at the Colts ground.

Chandimal’s knock which came off 82 balls comprised four boundaries and three sixes. Chandimal also put on a 68 runs stand for the third wicket with Geeth Alwis after openers skipper Upul Tharanga and Ian Daniel had given them a good start with a stand of 56 runs.

Earlier in the day Wayamba sent into bat by Ruhuna skipper Tharanga were well placed on 120 for 3 at lunch but they failed to capitalize on that as they lost the remaining seven wickets for the addition of only 41 runs. They lasted only 11.1 overs in the post lunch session.

Apart from a knock of 90 by Mahela Udawatte which had 14 boundaries and a six and also being associated in a 63 runs stand for the fifth wicket with Damitha Hunukumbura the others failed to make any impression. The match will be continued at 10 am today.

Wayamba 161 in 44.1 overs (Mahela Udawatte 90, Damitha Hunukumbura 23, Shalika Karunanayake 18: Sachitra Senanayake 4 for 54, Tharanga Lakshitha 3 for 33, Chanaka Komasaru 2 for 15)
Hirdramani Ruhuna 173 for 4 in 38 overs (Dinesh Chandimal 70, Upul Tharanga 39, Ian Daniel 32, Geeth Alwis 23 n.o.)
