Inter-Provincial Cricket
Basnahira South defeat Wayamba by 18 runs win

By M. Shamil Amit

An unbeaten 70 in 72 balls by Farveez Maharoof was in vain as it could not prevent Basnahira South from securing an 18 runs win over Wayamba in their Inter-Provincial limited over encounter at the Welagedera Stadium in Kurunegala yesterday.

Wayamba in their run chase of 272 runs though they lost wickets were well ahead in the run rate. A 64 runs stand for the ninth wicket between Farveez and Ajantha Mendis almost took them closer to victory.
But in the end it was so near but yet far. The dismissal of Ajantha with the score on 253 saw them losing their last wicket without any addition to the score, thus giving their opponents a win with seven balls to spare.
Earlier in the day Hasantha Fernando and Malinga Bandara came to the rescue of Basnahira South with a 101 runs partnership for the eighth wicket after skipper Malinda Warnapura who led in place of indisposed T.M. Dilshan won the toss and elected to bat.

The contributions that came from the top order batting was insufficient for Basnahira South as they lost wickets at regular intervals and were struggling on 151 for 7 in the 33rd over before ending on a respectable 271 for 8.

Basnahira South 271 for 8 in 50 overs (Hasantha Fernando 42, Nuwan Zoysa 31, Milinda Siriwardena 28, Gihan Rupasinghe 23, Janaka Gunaratne 17, Malinga Bandara 59 n.o; Rangana Herath 2 for 37, Ajantha Mendis 2 for 60)

Wayamba 253 in 48.1 overs (Jeewantha Kulatunga 34, Mahela Jayawardena 34, Michael Vandort 28, Ajantha Mendis 28, Isuru Udana 21, Jehan Mubarak 20, Farveez Maharoof 70 n.o; Suranga Lakmal 3 for 50, Malinga Bandara 2 for 54)

Ruhuna crush SLC Combined XI

Ruhuna was too good for the SLC Combined XI as they crushed them by a massive 191 runs in their inter-provincial limited over match played at the Galle International Stadium yesterday.

SLC Combined XI chasing a mammoth target of 294 runs found pacie Lasith Malinga too hot to handle as they succumbed to a pathetic 102.

Only Bhanuka Rajapakse was able to offer any resistance where others failed with almost a run a ball knock of 59 which had nine boundaries and a six. Lasith ended with impressive figures of 4 for 21 off just eight overs.

Earlier the SLC Combined XI was sent on a leather hunt by the Ruhunu who made a formidable 293 for 6. Ruhuna invited to bat by SLC Combined XI skipper Hans Fernando was given a rousing start by skipper Upul Tharanga and Sanath Jayasuriya who together added 108 runs.

SLC Combined XI tasted their first success in the 20th with the dismissal of Tharanga who made 41. From there on Jayasuriya joined by T.N. Sampath frustrated the bowlers further with the pair adding 59 runs for the second wicket before Jayasuriya who made a run a ball 89 with 11 boundaries and a six was dismissed.

Jayasuriya’s dismissal in the 31st over saw Ruhuna well placed on 167 for 2. Later in the innings with useful contributions coming from the later order batting helped Ruhuna end their inning by making 293 for 6.

Ruhuna 293 for 6 in 50 overs (Sanath Jayasuriya 87, T.N. Sampath 47, Upul Tharanga 41, Kosala Kulasekera 28, Lasith Fernando 27, Gihan de Silva 34 n.o.: Chathura Peiris 2 for 62)
SLC Combined XI 102 in 27.3 overs (Bhanuka Rajapakse 59: Lasith Malinga 4 for 21)
