A lesson from youth cricketers

Anybody who tuned into the Under 19 Sri Lanka-Australia semi-finals would have been moved by the big hearts shown by our youngsters in New Zealand. Here was a team of teenagers proudly wearing the national colours. Such was their undying commitment.

The boys were throwing themselves around as if their lives depended on it, even when it was obvious that the Aussies would pip them in the final. Bravo boys! The youth team’s performance in New Zealand brought back proud memories of our World Cup winning team. Sri Lanka may have lost that game by two wickets but not before signaling to the world that great things could be heard from them in the future. It was quite heartening to see seasoned campaigners like Aravinda de Silva and Upul Chandana accompanying the youngsters. Their mere presence alone would have inspired them no end. Great for cricket to see the future of Sri Lankan cricket in safe hands.

Sri Lanka team sponsor Anchor should be congratulated for the silent yet important role it played in coming forward to sponsor junior cricket which wouldn’t have brought them much publicity as all sponsors seek.

It makes the gesture all the more noteworthy and let’s hope Anchor’s decision to sponsor junior cricket would spur more companies.

Why not Kaushal Silva ?

I think it’s high time that the acrobatic wicket-keeper batsman Kaushal Silva is selected to play for Sri Lanka in One Day Internationals (50 overs a side). Kumar Sangakkara’s wicket keeping has gone down badly after he took over the captaincy of the national team. Therefore having Kaushal Silva as the wicket-keeper will give Sangakkara more time to concentrate on his batting as well as his captaincy for better field placing, bowling changes etc.

Kaushal Silva is an excellent batsman too. The obvious thing the selectors should do is to drop Kandamby and replace him with Kaushal Silva. Kandamby has been given so many chances but he has failed as a batsman. He is also a lethargic fielder and his running between the wickets is atrocious. His bowling too is mediocre. So why are the selectors persisting with him? Why not Kaushal Silva? I hope the selectors will take this suggestion in the same spirit that is given for the betterment of the Sri Lanka ODI Cricket team.
