Sri Lankan schools athletics seemed to be on the up with 9 records tumbling and 1 record being equaled on the fourth day of the National School Games 2009 held at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday.

With more than 5000 youth participating in the games it seems that Sri Lankan athletics will have no problem in finding the next batch of international stars from this vast squad of athletes. It was also pleasing to see athletes from the outstation schools out in force and the participants from the northern and eastern provinces striving to make their mark at these games with great success.

A special mention must be made of the J/Arunothaya College, Jaffna from the Northern Province which produced three winners in the various age groups of girl’s pole vault events with Sunukarasha Thanuja breaking the record in the under 19 pole vault with a performance of 2.81 meters which was previously held by J.M.D.N Piyumali of St. Anne’s Balika M.M.V, Wattala.

R. A. Chamika Jayamini of Sumana Balika Vidyalaya, Ratnapura shaved off nearly 6 seconds from the existing record in the under 17 girl’s 1500 Meter event when she finished her race with a time of 4.42.99.
