Alert policeman gets shoe-lifter in knots

By L.B.Senaratne

A suspected ‘shoe-lifter’ was arrested recently in the premises of the Sri Dalada Maligawa by an alert policeman manning the police barrier .

There have been many instances where footwear of devotees have been stolenfrom the Maligawa premises, but very rarely have the culprits been apprehended.

In this case, the policeman had been alerted on his mobile phone that a devotee could not locate his pair of shoes worth over Rs. 8,000. Police Sergeant Wijepala on suspicion had stopped a man who was leaving the premises. But the suspect took to his heels. He was soon apprehended by the policeman who discovered that he had a pair of shoes with him that he couldn’t account for.

The suspect was produced before Kandy’s Chief Magisitrate Sumudu Premachandra and remanded till October 10.
