Wasp attacks under study

By L.B.Senaratne

A team of veterinary and medical personnel has been formed to study wasp attacks on humans and find whether a repellent could be to made to ward off the wasps, especially those attacking visitors climbing the Sigiriya rock.

The team is headed by Dr.Ashok Dangolle from the Faculty of Veterinary Science and comprises Prof. R.V.J.Rajapakse from the Veterinary Research Institute at Gannoruwa and Dr. Shirani Ranasinghe from the Faculty of Medicine of the Peradeniya University.

This team is to study the wasps and other allied insects and devise a method to draw out the poisonous element in these insects and also find a repellent to ward off the wasps.

It is recorded that an elephant died after wasps attacked it at Elkaduwa some years ago. Already a research project on wasp attacks has been launched at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.
