Family killed in car-train crash

Four members of a family were killed on the spot yesterday morning when the car they were travelling in was hit by a train at the Seeduwa-Kurana railway crossing, while the remaining member succumbed to his injuries in hospital, police said.

Identified as a family from Katunayake, among those killed are the two children,Thilini Sujini (18) and M.D. Anupa Nipuna (16), their mother Nirmalee (50) and the grandmother, Susan Silva (70). The father, M.D.Anil Sumeetha, an employee of the Central Environment Authority (CEA), was seriously injured and later died at the Negombo Hospital.

There is no railway gate at the crossing but traffic lights operate to warn the motorists of any oncoming train.
