Troops on the Kilinochchi front

  • Govt. proposes no-war zone; troops 2 km from Kilinochchi

The Government has proposed a ten square kilometre demilitarized zone (DMZ) covering the villages of Oddusuddan and Viswamadu where a large number of internally displaced persons from western Wanni have taken shelter.

Oddusuddan and Viswamadu are in Tiger guerrilla-dominated Mullaitivu district. Army Commander Sarath Fonseka told this to media personnel present at yesterday’s ceremony at Sri Maha Bodhi in Anuradhapura to bless the flags of all regiments of the Army.

The move, The Sunday Times learnt, follows the lack of adequate response to an earlier call by the Government to urge the IDPs to move to safer locations in Vavuniya.

The Government has accused Tiger guerrillas of preventing them from leaving. Lt. Gen. Fonseka also said troops were now two kilometres away from Kilinochchi.
