Minimum wage of $250 on hold  
Sri Lankan migrant workers hoping for a New Year bonanza in the form of a sharp rise in their minimum wage will have to wait longer as the authorities want to raise the skills of workers, particularly domestics, before negotiating increased wages with other countries.
 
HolidayAir to launch in March

HolidayAir, the Lankan low cost airline which was waiting in the wings for more than a year, will finally take off in March next year.
“We are looking to launch on March 10 and will be occupying our operational offices at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) by February,” Arjun Ruzaik, CEO, HolidayAir told The Sunday Times FT.

 
President's Square project suspended

Top business houses near the President's residence in Fort are breathing a sigh of relief following a presidential decision not to go ahead with a plan to acquire their buildings for security reasons. The Sunday Times FT learns that the plan has been suspended and the acquisition order that went to companies like Carsons, George Steuart and Cargo Boat Despatch is expected to be revoked. This follows the glare of publicity over the President's Square Project in last Sunday’s newspapers including our newspaper.

George Steuart and Co. Ltd, one of Sri Lanka’s oldest companies, has got a new look and big plans for the New Year.
The company is considering venturing into three new areas of business as part of its diversification plans. Building management, construction and healthcare industries are the three main cards on the table for George Steuart in 2007.

The Central Bank is preparing a ‘clearer’ policy on shareholdings limits in commercial banks which are confined to 10 percent per individual or institution but can go up with the approval of the Monetary Board (MB).
