Exporters call for accepted system of governance

The Exporters’ Association of Sri Lanka last week welcomed the MoU between the SLFP and the UNP and hoped this would quickly lead to a transformation of a system of governance acceptable to everyone in the country.

However, the statement issued by association chairman Mohan Mendis, voiced disappointment that the key issues of economic development and educational reforms have been left out from the document.

“It is hoped that with the core issue relating to the conflict being first addressed along with the subject of good governance and electoral reforms, the economy and education being dealt with will be the natural consequence in the spirit of cooperation which will exist,” he said while praising the exemplary leadership.

While saying that vexed issues require courage and extraordinary measures to resolve, the association said one of the crucial hindrances obstructing those in the south and the west from addressing the grievances of the minorities have been the polarisation of views of the two main political parties preventing even right thinking people on either side to do what needs to be done to diffuse the tension and move towards peace.

“We now have the very welcome situation of a convergence of opinion which if taken to its logical destination of concrete measures to solve the national issue that by itself would be the most positive step in disarming those who have taken recourse to violence,” the statement added.
