Mid-day meals: Children selected from more than 7000 schools

More than 1.1 million students have been selected to receive the free mid-day meal until the end of next year, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said recently.

In addition to an allocation of Rs 100 million from the government, a string of donor agencies and foreign missions have also stepped into provide to support the programme. The World Food Programme, United Nation agencies and USAID are among those who have supported the programme.

The students have been selected from 7,425 schools from the total of 10,159 schools in the country. Minister Premajayantha said there will also be a programme to monitor the meal distribution for the students.

The moves come amid multiple reports that many students arrive in schools without meals, and some teachers have confirmed these reports.
