A special ceremony was organised by the Pakistan High Commission, at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH) on August 16 to award bright and deserving local A/L students. The ceremony was held in continuation of Pakistan’s 76th Independence Day celebrations marked on August 14.

Scholarships have been awarded by Pakistan’s Government to aspiring Sri Lankan O/L and A/L students since 2006, and so far, more than 2300 Sri Lankan students have benefitted from this programme which was named after Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the revered founding father of Pakistan.

Pakistani Ambassador Major General (Retd) Umar Farooq Burki welcomed all guests to the ceremony.  In his welcome speech he said Pakistan had been a proud partner of Sri Lanka in enhancing the capabilities of youth with better educational opportunities.

Pakistan’s Government had been providing higher education scholarships to Sri Lankan students under different scholarship programmes since 1976 including the Pakistan Technical Assistance Programme (PTAP) in the fields of Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy and Engineering, and Allama Iqbal scholarships.

Major General (Retd) Burki thanked the guests for gracing this auspicious occasion. He emphasised on the importance of the bilateral relationship that both countries enjoy and the fact that Pakistan aims at strengthening these strong ties manifolds.

The occasion was graced by Education Minister Susil Premajayantha, as the chief guest. The Education Minister also congratulated the students who were selected for the Jinnah scholarship. The chief guest paid a rich tribute to the founding father of Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah for his efforts in the creation of Pakistan.

He also said these scholarships being awarded to Sri Lankan students based purely on merit and across all ethnicities was a matter of great pleasure. He also recalled the robust Pak-Lanka relations and appreciated the prestigious Jinnah Scholarship scheme which has benefitted Sri Lankan students since 2006.
