KOICA, a Korean government agency focused on development cooperation for people, together with UNICEF has donated a newly constructed school in the Northern province.

The school, Mukkomban Maha Vidyalayam in Kilinochchi, was handed over at a ceremony which was held recently.

It was attended by Korean Ambassador Santhush Woonjin Jeong, KOICA Country Director Myung Jin Kim, UNICEF Representative Emma Brigham and Northern province Chief Secretary S.M. Saman Bandulasena.

“KOICA, Korea’s official grant aid agency has actively contributed to the betterment of the Kilinochchi district, especially in the education sector. This project focuses not only on the infrastructural development of these schools but also on the capacity building of teachers, school advisers, and most importantly parents too. It is important to ensure that a project is implemented in such a manner that it ensures the fullest benefit to the target beneficiaries,” the envoy said.

“Since 2014, KOICA has conducted activities to uplift the education standards in the Kilinochchi District, which have benefitted more than 7000 students. Through KOICA we have conducted many projects in the education sector and we hope to ensure that Sri Lankan students are equipped with the know-how to tackle any challenge in a competent manner. I am sure it will be the driving force behind the overall national development of the country,” he added.

UNICEF Representative Emma Brigham also appreciated the continuous support of the Korean government to assist Sri Lankan students.

KOICA provided support for emergency education supplies in the Northern province along with UNICEF. This included paper and notebooks for the local government, schools, and students to mitigate the shortage of education supplies and continue teaching and learning for around 200,000 children. Some of them were from the most disadvantaged backgrounds.
