Official says staff attendance has been high over the past couple of weeks

The Education Ministry is planning to have classes in schools for the full week instead of the current system of limited classes during the week due to the fuel crisis.

Education Ministry officials will call for a meeting with provincial educational officials and zonal directors via Zoom to discuss plans for this to take place, a senior Education Ministry official said.

The Ministry has taken into consideration the attendance of staff during the past few weeks. In the Western province teacher attendance was around 90 per cent while in outstation areas the figures were around 80 per cent, the official said.

“We also believe the public sector transport services have now been restored with diesel supplies available while petrol too is being issued on a quota system. This will be sufficient for staff to use their personal bikes or vehicles,” the official said.

He said the Ministry believed educational activities in schools could now fully resume, after taking into consideration these aspects. After discussions take place there is a possibility that schools would be opened first for four days a week and then for
five days.

During the discussions they would also take up the issue of completing syllabuses during this term as academic activities had already been affected due to the closure of schools this year.

The normal August school holidays would not be granted as part of the measures to keep schools open to complete the syllabuses.
