The Cabinet has accepted the proposal of the Labour and Foreign Employment Minister Manusha Nanayakkara to promote Japanese language proficiency in schools.

The proposal included teaching Japanese in the Advanced Level Technology stream under the 13-year educational programme, to provide Sri Lankan youth with nearly 350,000 job opportunities.

English and soft skills are also to be added to the five most suitable fields of the 14 SSW (Specified Skilled Worker) fields which are nursing, hospitality, building cleaning, agricultural, automotive technology and electric and electronic fields, Mr Nanayakkara said. Accordingly, it had been planned to implement the curriculum in at least one school in each educational zone, without delay.

The aim of this proposal was to prevent youth who had “passed exams, but failed life” by providing language and professional skills to unlock a wider range of job opportunities.

It was expected that students would be capable of participating in the Japanese Language Proficiency Test, held every two months.

Students who completed all the qualifications would be introduced to Japanese employers by the Foreign Employment Bureau and the Japanese Embassy.

This decision was taken since the 13 training centres under the Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau were inadequate for the task.

With the permission of the Labour and Foreign Employment Ministry, vocational training institutes, voluntary and regional level institutes were capable of teaching Japanese.

The Cabinet had also provided permission for the establishment of an international higher education centre under the sponsorship of UNESCO.

This was a proposal of Education Minister Susil Premajayantha, and a memorandum of understanding for educational support would be signed soon in this regard.

This was done in accordance with changes in world educational systems, where subjects such as Information Technology, Robotics and Data Analysis were given prominence.
