This year’s A/L exams postponed to early December

The 2021 A/L exam results will be released at the end of this month Education Minister Susil Premajayantha announced recently. The Minister said the reason for the delay in results, which were meant to be released on August 15, was due to the inability to hold practical exams.

Due to the situation in the country in June, practical exams were postponed. The practical exams were to be conducted for technology and aesthetic subjects, the Minister told the Parliament.

In accordance, the 2022 A/L exams were postponed by a week to the first week of December. The practical exams for biology, physics, chemistry and technology were also expected to be held within the next three months.

The Minister said 84%, 71%, 82% and 75% of the practical exams for biology, physics, chemistry and technology had been completed.

He said the first shy candidate was ready for the exam, and was required to finish the exam as soon as possible, adding that only second and third shy candidates had a problem regarding the dates.

“Skilled children have accepted this challenge to do the exams. It is only the unskilled children that ask for the exam to be postponed,” the Minister said.

The Education Ministry presented an online session as a solution to teachers incapable of knowing the limitations of subject matter for A/Ls.

The online sessions are being conducted for physics, chemistry, mathematics and biology, involving around 60000 A/L candidates.

The Ministry expected to complete 24 subjects by next week and the sessions were conducted by lecturers of 17 universities.

The programme which was to be executed within three months was expected to provide revision, papers and even literature and provide an opportunity to solve problems related to papers.

The attendance of teachers and students on August 8 was 80% and 75% respectively, with the highest numbers reported from the Northern province which had 88% teacher attendance and 81% student attendance.

The Minister appreciated the determination of the students and teachers in the Northern province to participate in education activities, and praised them for their perseverance even during the civil war.
