Teachers engaged in paper marking ask for advanced payments

Teachers involved in the 2021 O/L exam paper marking have requested for an advance from the Education Department to cover their travel expenses.  It is learnt that they are undergoing great difficulties in reaching the paper marking centres because of lack of public transport.

Moreover they are unable to use their own vehicles because of the shortage of fuel in the country.

As a remedy, the Education Ministry has distributed permits in the form of letters to the 15,000 teachers participating in paper marking. The letters can be handed over to the nearest filling station, to gain fuel ahead of the long queues.

However teachers from rural areas doubted whether the arrangement would work as serving stations near their homes do not get fuel supply for several days if not weeks.

Meanwhile Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) said the Education Ministry has a backlog of payments pending for work done in correcting  the 2021 grade five scholarship exams and the 2021 A/L exams held in January and February this year.

“The government has to pay more than Rs. 1200 million in arrears,” he said.

Discussions have been ongoing on the payment due with the Education Ministry assuring to pay up soon.

Mr.  Stalin said the teachers had started work with the understanding that an advance will be paid on payments for work being done at present.

In the meantime the Government has also agreed to an increase of Rs. 1200 a day for paper marking.

It is understood that a circular to this effect will be distributed next week.

The paper marking began on Friday (17) and will continue till June 26. (CC)
