Sri Lanka will bank on Indian and Chinese assistance to provide next year’s text books, printing material and uniforms for school students for next year, Education Minister Susil Premajayantha said.

The Minister said discussions have already been held regarding the assistance to ensure that education activities can be continued without an interruption next year.

He said permission has already been sought to use US$ 65 million from a US$ one billion credit line from India for the printing of text books, examination papers and other printing material.

He said the funds would be sufficient to manage for the entire year.

The subject was also taken up at a meeting at the Prime Minister’s office as well.

Separately an agreement has been reached to purchase 50 per cent of the required uniform material from China under a credit line, Minister Premajayantha said.

He also said they would be able to purchase about 15 per cent of the material from local sources.

“The rest of the material will be purchased from China,” he added.
