Tourist vehicles can obtain diesel from state bus depots

Diesel vehicles transporting tourists and registered with the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) will be issued with a special sticker to draw fuel from bus depots on a priority basis in view of the shortages experienced.

A Tourism Ministry official said the measure had been taken after a string of incidents where tourists were left stranded in different areas due to the fuel shortages.

Accordingly, vehicles with the special stickers could call over at any bus depots in the country and receive fuel. The Transport Ministry has agreed to the proposal.

The decision to release fuel to the tourism sector was taken at a meeting presided over by Finance Minister Basil Rajapaksa after it was pointed out that several tourists were inconvenienced during the week.

The Tourism Ministry also has written to the Inspector General of Police to provide assistance to tourist vehicles in the event tourists are left stranded without fuel.

A letter has also been sent to the Police Chief, requesting him to make arrangements for hotels to obtain diesel to run their generators as some of the hotels had complained they were unable to provide electricity to the entire hotel during power cuts.

“The arrangements have been made taking into consideration the negative impact the fuel shortages has caused to the vital tourism industry,” a senior Tourism Ministry official said.

In some areas, vehicles transporting tourists were seen in long queues at fuel stations.
