Havelocks beat Navy SC by 21-5 in their Club Rugby League match played at Havelock Park under lights yesterday. At halftime Havies led by 21-0, and scored from three converted tries while the Sailors scored off a solitary unconverted try.

The entire first half was at the control of Havelocks despite losing flyhalf Sandesh Jayawickrama within six minutes from the start for 10 minutes. Jayawickrama was sin-binned for challenging the ball and despite the advantage of an extra man, the Sailors failed to impress. Havies were forceful and irrefutable in spite of having one man less. Yet for more than the half the duration of the first half neither sides could score a single point.

The floodgates were opened by the home team after Jayawickrama rejoined his unit. The home team launched their onslaught with a try off winger Ramesh Fernando in the 24th minute with Jayawickrama adding extra points. The same combination of Fernando and Jayawickrama pushed Havies further as they were placed comfortably ahead 14-0 by the 30th minute. Winger Asitha Punchihewa joined the party with another try few minutes later and with Jayawickrama’s conversion Havelocks led the halftime 21-0.

Three yellow cards were issued after the turnaround, one on Navy’s Dananjaya Seneviratne and Matheesha Sarathchandra and Umesh Madushan of Havies by the 50th minute. Taking advantage of the position, the Sailors scored a try off hooker Amith Gunasinghe, who later was sent to the sin bin.
