Police have begun an inquiry into an incident where shopkeepers in Moragahahena, Homagama had reportedly been told to remove signboards as the President was due to travel on that route.

Officer-in-Charge, Moragahahena Police, Nalin Sanjeewa said residents had complained that a group of persons in civvies claiming to be security personnel had told them to pull down the boards on Friday.

President Gotabaya Rajapaksa was due to travel to Millewa, Horana to visit the land where the Welikada Prison is to be relocated.

A resident had also posted a video on social media appealing authorities not to harass small-time businessmen like him who have put up small sign boards.

The resident told the Sunday Times that his intention was not to bring disrepute to anyone, but to call attention to the inconvenience they faced.

Director Communication, President’s Office, Mohan Karunaratna said no such incident was reported to them.

Mr Karunaratna said that the President had taken another route to the site.
