Murky waters

The Lake Gregory area of the scenic Nuwara Eliya District is suffering an ecological devastation with the accumulation of river silt in its depths. The 147-year-old historic body of water is fed by the Nanu Oya, which has contributed large scale deposits of mud, depriving the lake of clean water.

The lake has also become a breeding ground for Sylvania and other invasive plants, which are thriving on its surface and suffocating it. This has threatened the fisheries and tourism potential of the popular lake. Urgent attention is needed to reverse the destruction of this geological feature which is the pride of Nuwara Eliya.

Boat rides on the lake have been temporarily suspended due to the pandemic.
