CTU slams appointment of SLPP member for top Education Ministry post

The Education Ministry is planning on posting an outsider to a position in the Sri Lanka Administrative Service (SLAS) the Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) said last week. The Education Times learned that a Sri Lanka Podu Jana Party (SLPP) member and a trade union activist had been singled out for the position of Sports Director General in the Education Ministry.

CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin said the position had been newly created to accommodate the SLPP member. He said this goes against the SLAS minutes which dictates that only SLAS officers can qualify for the post. In 2018, a move by the former Government to appoint a person outside the SLAS cadre had been rebuffed and a court case was filed by the SLAS Union.

“This is wrong. Law makers themselves cannot break the law,” Mr Stalin said. -CC
