The Kingswood Union, the old boys association of Kingswood College, has passed a resolution to give powers to the past students in the union. This motion was passed after an Education Ministry circular was released, which automatically makes the current principal of the school the union’s president.

The resolution was passed at the recent 116th Kingswood Union Annual General Meeting, where Tissa Bandara Wijeratne was elected unanimously for a further term as the union’s President.

The circular issued by the Ministry announced that a school principal should be the president of any past student’s association.

In the amended Constitution it was suggested the college principal should be the President and the President elected by Kingswood Union would be the Executive President.

The current President informed the general body of members that negotiations are under way in this direction with the education authorities.  He said the discussions would be fruitful.

Amending the Constitution of the union was taken up for discussion.  It was revealed to the members that the committee had discussions with Education Ministry officials.

They also said they had studied the Constitutions of other college past student unions to gather information to align themselves with the Education Ministry circular.

Several union members said President Wijeratne had steered the union during ‘heavy’ storms during the past few years, and they proposed his name as the new President.

They said he should be the President for a further term to sort out the immediate needs of the union and the college.

This proposal was carried out and he was elected President for the year 2020/2021, unanimously.

President Tissa Wijeratne said the Kingswood Union was graced by the college principal after a number of years and he thanked the Principal for his support.

The AGM was held in the L. E. Blaze Memorial Hall at Kingswood College.
