Applicants who will be sitting for the 2020 Ordinary Level (O/L) examinations to submit their applications before August 31 to obtain National Identity Cards (NICs), the Department for Registration of Persons recently announced. “Generally every year we receive 350,000 applications.

But until this week we have only received 250,000 applications. Therefore more than 100, 000 applications are expected,” the department’s Commissioner General P.V. Gunatilaka said.

Even though the candidates were advised to fill the forms by reading carefully, a large number of NIC applications were filled with mistakes, and there were late submissions as well, the Commissioner General said.

“The department had made many requests to school principals about this, but there has been no change. As a result, these inconveniences cause a delay in issuing the NICs,” he said.  He also said the information about the NIC applications and the submission deadline had been forwarded to all school principals.
