Mahamaya College, Kandy, a school better known for its swimming, stamped their class this time in Basket Ball in the Under-15 and Under-17 segments after two decades. They got selected to an ‘A’ division tournament this year after 20 long years and became the second runners-up in Under-15, All-Island ‘A’ Division Girls’ Tournament.

Meanwhile their seniors of Under-17 event, became first runners-up in the National School Games, which took place two months back. They went one step ahead when they booked their berth for the All-lsland Basketball Championship 2019 Under-19 event in the Top Division Super 8.

The Under-15 outfit was led by Anuki de Silva, and she had a wonderful set of players, which included Dewmini Manthrige, Chenuli Warnakulage, Senuji Udugama, Hasini Welagedara, Dayadi Ginige, Vishmi Karunarathne, Chithera Samarakoon, Kissalie Jayapala, Himara Wijerathna and Sajani Darmasena.

Chamith Pushpakumara coached the team to success with the support of Hirupama Chandrasekera as the teacher-in-charge.

The Under-17 team was captained by Charuni Gunawardhana, who had the services of Kissalie Jayapala, Chithera Samarakoon, Vishmi Karunaratne, Penusha Udapamunuwa, Tharuni Kulathunga, Dinithi Chandrasekara, Chenuli Warnakulage and Anuki de Silva. Chamith Pushpakumara was the coach. - SJ
