Veteran journalist Gaston dies; he wrote hundreds of columns

Gaston de Rosayro was a recepient of the Editors’ Guild’s Lifetime Achievement Award

One of Sri Lanka’s leading journalists Gaston de Rosayro passed away on Friday, at the age of 74.

He was a professional working journalist for more than half a century and worked at newspapers in Colombo, Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong. After starting his career in the Daily News as a reporter, Gaston rose to be a sub-editor, local news editor and Chief Sub-Editor. He also worked in the Sunday Observer as a reporter, sub-editor and columnist.

Gaston left Sri Lanka in 1978 to work at the New Straits Times at Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia and served as a senior sub-editor with executive rank. Later he joined the Singapore Monitor as a senior editor.

In 1985 he joined the Hong Kong Standard as Managing editor and worked there for eight years. In 1993 Gaston functioned as senior editor in the Hong Kong based South China Morning Post. On his return to Sri Lanka Gaston became the Editor in Chief of the Weekend Express published by the Express Newspapers Group. After he left the Weekend Express, Gaston wrote regular columns for the Daily News.

In 2017 he received the Lifetime Achievement Award of the Editors Guild of Sri Lanka.

Gaston’s body now lies at “the Respect Home” of the Jayaratne funeral parlour and the burial will take will place at 9.30 am today at the Catholic Section of the Kanatte General Cemetery in Borella.
