Lankadeepa journalist who exposed illegal toddy trade attacked

A journalist attached to the ‘Lankadeepa’ newspaper and his family were attacked by a group of gangsters allegedly involved in the illegal manufacture and trade of bottled toddy in the Aluthgama area on Friday night.

Tusitha Kumar de Silva a correspondent of our sister paper ‘Lankadeepa’ and his wife were assaulted near their home at Hettimulla in Aluthgama.
The gangsters demanded the journalist stop reporting on the illegal manufacture and trade in toddy.

The gangsters had initially entered the journalist’s home, threatened his son and caused damage to the house when he was away.
When the couple heard of the attack on their home, they rushed back, but were waylaid and assaulted .

During the fisticuffs that ensued, the men robbed de Silva’s mobile phone and his wallet. The couple have been admitted to Aluthgama Hospital.

DIG Kalutara Division, W. Guneratne said police were investigating the incident and arrests would be made early.

The journalist had exposed the ongoing illegal manufacture of bottled toddy in his articles last week.
