The Coordinating Secretary to the Election Commission, Rizan M.A. Hameed has responded to our front page report last week, headlined, General Elections in late April or early May, polls chief tells president.”

He says in a letter, “Chairman of the Election Commission directed me to inform you that the article, “General elections in late April or early May, polls chief tells President” published in the Sunday Times of 1st December, 2019, contains erroneous information as Mr. Deshapriya has not met the President on any occasion after the official declaration of results on the 17th November at the Election Secretariat.

A detailed letter will be sent to you by tomorrow as the Chairman is away from Colombo, today.”

Note by the News Editor: The Sunday Times stands corrected on the EC Chairman’s statement that he did not meet President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. The story should have said it was a telephone call. As for a second letter, Mr Hameed said it was not being sent to us. We stand by the facts in the story other than this inadvertent error
