Assault on State Counsel: Convicts appeal against HC ruling

A father and son sentenced to prison after being found guilty of assaulting a state prosecutor and holding him hostage have filed an appeal in the Court of Appeal.

G.A.D Chulasiri Ganegoda and his son G.A.D. Neelanuwan Maduranga Ganegoda were found guilty by the Gampaha High Court of all four charges filed against them. Chulasiri Ganegoda was sentenced to 12 years RI to be served in eight years while his teenage son was sentenced to four years R.I. suspended for five years.

They were also ordered to pay compensation amounting to Rs. 600,000 to the victim, State Counsel Udara Karunathilaka.

Filing an appeal through their lawyer Ranjit Fernando, the two convicts claimed that the trial judge had erred in fact and in law.
