Ministry says salary issue resolved, strike unnecessary

Following the strike by the Ceylon Teachers’ and Principals’ Unions last week, the Ministry of Education (MoE) said the strike was unnecessary, as their salary anomaly issue has been resolved and will be effective from next year.

A statement issued by the MoE said the recommendations of a salary anomalies committee will come into effect on January 1, 2020.

In this backdrop, the strike action by teachers and principals was uncalled for, and has created great inconvenience to the schoolchildren and the public.

It said that the trade unions were trying to score browny points by protesting over an issue which has already been resolved.

This Government, it said, has, in the past, increased principals’ allowances tenfold, streamlined promotions to teachers and principals and set proper retirement schemes for retiring officers. - CC
