The Gateway Colleges held their Choral Festival for the 4th consecutive year and celebrated the first anniversary of the Adelaide Choral Fest – born of an inspirational partnership between Gateway College and the University of Adelaide, the Soul Sounds Academy and Gateway Graduate School – on Thursday, 19th September at the Gateway College Dehiwala Auditorium.

Gateway College Dehiwala, together with The University of Adelaide, presented “The Adelaide Choral Fest – Broadway Musicals” for this year’s production. The concert featured the choirs of the Gateway Colleges of Colombo, Kandy, Negombo and Dehiwala together with guest performances by the Choir of Methodist College, Colombo, the Canto Perpetua of S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia and the Choir of Holy Family Convent, Bambalapitiya.

All the choirs brought on stage musicals from Broadway to the audience, in a creative exposition, keeping them enraptured and tapping their toes to the beat of well-loved songs from The Lion King to Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat to Aladdin and many more.

Researchers on Music Education report that music has facilitated the learning of students in school and enhanced their skills. Children are able to learn other subjects better and understand the world more, when they are exposed to and learn about music. Accordingly, in all Gateway College campuses, students are enthusiastically encouraged to join their choirs, participate in their musical drama productions, play in their bands and perform at their talent contests, while many opportunities and training for these activities are provided.

In this constant endeavour and striving to give their students the best in education, the Gateway Graduate School too, formed a unique collaboration last year, with the University of Adelaide and the Soul Sounds Academy to offer a degree programme in Business and Music to students interested in the same.

The first year of the degree will be jointly delivered in Sri Lanka, by the Gateway Graduate School and the Soul Sounds Academy. On successful completion of the first year, students will receive an international Diploma in Business (awarded by UK’s NCC Education) and a Diploma in Music (jointly awarded by the Gateway Graduate School and the Soul Sounds Academy).

They will also qualify to go into the second year of undergraduate studies at the University of Adelaide in Australia.
