Founded in 1957, The Overseas School of Colombo (OSC) is Sri Lanka’s oldest and most prestigious International School. The school is reputed for the high quality of education offered, which focuses on the wholistic development of the child. Being the only school in Sri Lanka to offer the International Baccalaureate (IB) programme from Preschool to Grade 12, OSC takes pride in its international student community (which currently represents 44 different nationalities) as well as the innovative teaching methodology that engages students’ creative and critical capacities.

OSC Founders Day 2019 was celebrated on the 20th of September and was attended by students – both past and present, parents, staff members, well-wishers, and dignitaries. The Chief Guest was Ms. Visaka Samarasinha – a former teacher, who served the school for 16 long years during which the school moved campuses on three separate occasions. Ms. Samarasinha shared a number of anecdotes from her time at the school, whilst taking the audience on a trip down memory lane. Head of School – Dr. Michelle Kleiss in her welcome message, reflected upon the school’s glorious past, and shared her vision for OSC which promises exciting times ahead! Dr. Kleiss spoke with pride about OSC students and what makes them special “OSC students appreciate that diverse and integrated ways of thinking are critical to solutions. They have a voice and know how to use it to stand up for what they believe in, and what they value. OSC students are resilient and capable. They are engaged and are striving to make a difference in the lives of others.”

The event was also graced by Guests of Honour, OSC alumnae – Ms. Christina de Silva and Ms. Dhanya Madugalle, former OSC scholarship recipients who continue to do their alma mater proud. One of the highlights of the event was the infotainment item ‘Who Wants to Be a Gecko?’ – an adaptation of the popular TV gameshow ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?’. The segment provided both participants and the audience with a unique and entertaining experience. The closing segment paid tribute to long serving employees of the school who have made a significant contribution to its success over the years.

The Sunday Times team wishes The Overseas School of Colombo many more years of academic excellence, success, and growth.
