Expected to be a evenly contested game, Museaus College scored an easy 37-18 win over Gateway College to retain the Marie Musaeus-Rohini Alles Challenge Trophy annual netball encounter at the Gateway College, grounds, Ratmalana last Saturday.

Both schools looked strong with players who have represented the country at international level, but the better fancied Museaus College had their hands on the glittering trophy which made its way to Rosmead Place for the second occasion.

Gateway College’s Aneesha Perera and Vishmika Ratnayake were members of the team that finished third in the Asian Youth Championship while Tiana Bollegala of Museaus College represented Sri Lanka Schools team.

It was Museaus College’s date, who dominated play from the start. They started the proceedings with a bang finding the net ring on four occasions. They went to end the 1st quarter maintaining the same pattern of play leading 12-2.

Even though the 2nd quarter was closely contested, but Gateway failed to close the gap. Scores stood at the end of the 2nd quarter 19-9. Museaus kept their scoring trend in the third quarter increasing their tally to 30-13. When the final whistle was blown it was  Museaus all the way in the lead 37-18 to walk away emerging the winners of the Marie Musaeus-Rohini Alles trophy in second consecutive year.

Museaus lasses made use of their height and speed with well positioned passes to rattle the Gateway defence.

For the winners Musaeus College, the Wijenayake sisters, Nethmi and Dilmi combined with Adithiya Pasquel and Oneli Bambananda played a big role in their victory. They kept the Gateway players under pressure from the start invading Gateway territory frequently which upset the Ratmalana school’s plans.

In the Under-15 encounter Musaeus defeated Gateway College 9-6. Senuthi Kottegoda and Onethra Jayasena of Musaeus named the Best Player and Best Shooter respectively. Methuli Erahapola of Gateway was adjudged the Best Defender. In the Exhibition match Gateway, Kandy beat Methodist College 12-2.
