The Ceylon Teachers Union (CTU) last week cried foul at Government action to grant transfers to newly appointed teachers, to National schools, within a 2-month period.

It is learned that several Development officers in the Education Department who were appointed teachers in May this year, to fill vacancies in the less popular National schools have been granted transfers to popular schools.

The CTU said that Grade 2 Class teachers have been recruited under Gazette notification No. 2073 of 25.05.2018, on condition they will not be eligible for transfers for a period of 8 years.

CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin said the teachers are being granted transfers because of political influence. While this is in contradiction to the Gazette notification, it will also defeat the purpose for which they were recruited. “The schools will once again fall short of teachers and go back to square one,” he said.
