The Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) is investigating an incident seen on social media video clips where a popular Maths tuition teacher’s bodyguards are seen intimidating and attacking a van driver at Kalagedihena in Nittambuwa.

Four suspects have been arrested after they surrendered to the CCD. They were remanded till July 22 after being produced in the Attanagalla magistrate’s court last evening.

The suspects are charged for assault and causing damage to the vehicle.

Investigations are continuing to ascertain whether tuition master Dinesh Nuwan Amaratunga and others were involved in the incident, the CCD’s Acting Director Udaya Hemantha said.

According to investigations, one of the vehicles from which the bodyguards got off was a Prado registered under Mr Amaratunga, while a Defender jeep which followed is registered under an individual named Chandula Amaratunga of Gallegoda, Ingiriya.

The bodyguards, who were clad in attire similar to those worn by VIP security personnel, were employed by Mr Amaratunga who also conducts maths programmes on a TV channel.

On Friday, Police recovered the Defender jeep used by some of the suspects. The vehicle was found parked at a house in Elhena Road, Maharagama. The driver of this jeep was one of the suspects in custody. He was identified as Hewage Gamini Wijesuriya (45) of Mathugama.

The other three suspects are Vidana Arachchilage Geeth Prasanna Bandara (32) of Polonnaruwa, Marcus Peter Ruwan Prasanna 26) of Kalutara and Vedisingha Arachchige Sandun Pushpakumara (44) of Thalgasdola.

The incident sparked off when the van travelling along the Kandy-Colombo road failed to give way to the Defender and Prado vehicles. The driver later lodged a complaint with police.

CCTV footage of the incident went viral on social media, prompting public outrage. It was initially thought a politician was involved in the incident.
