Four suspects who were allegedly involved in an incident where bodyguards of a Maths tutor attacked a van at Kalagedihena in Nittambuwa, have been taken into custody by the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD).

Footage of the attack went viral on social media

The 4 suspects currently in custody have been named as Hewage Gamini Wijesuriya (45) of Mathugama, Vidana Arachchilage Geeth Prasanna Bandara (32) Polonnaruwa, Marcus Peter Ruwan Prasanna 26) of Kalutara and Vedisingha Arachchige Sandun Pushpakumara (44) of Thalgasdola. All four surrendered to police.

All 4 were to be produced in the Attanagalla Magistrate’s Court last evening.

Police on Friday (19) recovered the Defender bearing registration number WP CAD 8850 that was allegedly used by some of the suspects. The vehicle was found parked at a house in Elhena Road, Maharagama. The driver of this Defender is also among the four suspects taken into custody, and investigations are ongoing to arrest several other suspects, Acting CCD Director Superintendent of Police Udaya Hemantha told the Sunday Times.

The Defender is registered to an individual named Chandula Amaratunga of Gallegoda, Ingiriya, while a Prado vehicle involved in the incident is registered under Dinesh Nuwan Amaratunga, also of Gallegoda, Ingiriya.

The bodyguards, who were clad in attire similar to those worn by security personnel of VIPs, are alleged to be in the employment of Dinesh Nuwan Amaratunga, a popular Maths tutor.

The incident occurred when a group of bodyguards allegedly employed by Mr Amaratunga attacked a van at Kalagedihena, after it failed to give way to the Defender and Prado vehicles. The driver later lodged a complaint with police.

Footage of the incident was captured on video and went viral on social media, prompting public outrage.
