More than 12,000 claims, amounting Rs 533 million, have been paid under the Suraksha Insurance scheme during the past 6 months, said Education Minister Akila Vrija Kariyawasam.

Of them, payments were made for 145 student deaths and 1,630 parents’ deaths.

Currently, 4.5 million students are covered under this insurance scheme and a student is entitled to about Rs 2 million in total per year.

The benefits from the scheme have been increased last year.

He said there were extra benefits which could be obtained by the students and called on parents to seek proper information of the scheme and accordingly obtain the required benefits.

He said that, if there instances where claims have not been paid, they could inform the Ministry of Education on 0112 369 369 / 0113 641 555.
