Fifteen families in vicinity of Karadiana garbage mountain evacuated

Fifteen families living in areas considered to be in danger of landslides in the vicinity of the Karadiana garbage mountain, had been moved out of the danger zone, Western Province Garbage Management Authority Director Nalin Manamperuma said.He said in accordance to a Certificate of Conformity issued by the National Construction Research Institute steps were taken to shift the people to a safer area.

He added each of the affected families had been provided with a sum of Rs. 25,000/- as a short-term measure to help them rent out houses for a six-month period. He said arrangements were being made to secure valuation reports on the value of the land they had been occupying to enable the payment of compensation, which would be paid within a short time.

Mr. Mannappperuma said the National construction Institute was keeping a close watch on the garbage mountain, especially during the current period of bad weather, to ensure no disasters would take place during unfavourable weather conditions. Pix by Rekha Tharangani Fonseka
