CDF member remanded for allegedly poisoning 27 goats

A Civil Defence Force (CDF) member who allegedly poisoned 27 goats, for damaging his papaya plantation in Thanthirimale, in the Anuradhapura district, was remanded till Wednesday.

His 15-year-old son, who was arrested along with him, was released on bail, police said.

The Officer-in-Charge of Thanthirimale police SI K.N. Sirimewan said the incident had taken place on June 22.

The goats, belonging to Herath Mudiyanselage Gammagedara Ranaveera Banda, had repeatedly damaged the half-acre Papaya plantation belonging to Herath Mudiyanselage Sujith Priyantha. He and his son Herath Mudiyanselage Tharindu Dilashan (15), reportedly had bottles of poison in their possession when arrested.

Police said the two suspects had threatened the owner of the goats several times, that they would poison the goats, if they continued to damage the papaya plantation.

Veterinary surgeon Dr T.M.G.G Madatuwa who conducted the postmortem examination, said the 14 goats had poison in their bodies.

Meanwhile, Police said 13 more goats had gone missing and they are conducting further investigations.

In a related development, the 15-year-old boy who was released on bail, was rearrested for his involvement in a robbery at Vilachchiya, police said.  - Pix by Upul Herath
