The signal at the level crossing where six soldiers were killed in Kilinochchi on Tuesday, had been malfunctioning for the past four months and complaints regarding it had been ignored, investigations have revealed. The alarm had not been working properly during that period due to an issue in the supply of power.
This was the third accident in four months. Three lives were claimed in an earlier accident.

Five of the soliders were killed instantly when a truck carrying them tried to cross the track while the other succumbed to his injuries at the Kilinochchi hospital the following day. The train was travelling from Colombo to Jaffna.
