The Moratuwa YMCA of  joined hands with the YMCA brothers and sisters worldwide to celebrate 175 years of Volunteerism at the “YMCA World Challenge 2019″.

The movement, established in 1844, in London, has spread to 119 countries with over 68 million members. Every year YMCAs worldwide celebrate Founder’s Day with a global event.

This year’s theme was 175 minutes of volunteer work. The Moratuwa ‘Y’ chose to clean an area of the Moratuwa beach, with the participation of the Children’s Club and leaders. Altogether 32 volunteers took part in the world challenge.

The inorganic waste collected through the exercise, was collected by the Moratuwa Municipal Council waste management service.

This exercise by the children, not only sent a message to the elders, who watched the cleaning process, but also educated them on the need to protect the environment.
