A majestic tusker believed to have gone missing a year ago from the Kalawewa National Park area has returned, wildlife officials said.

The Galkiriyagama wildlife rangers’ office confirmed that the tusker identified as Deegadanthu -01 had returned to the park. Officials said the tusker was in good health and that the gunshot injury on one of its front legs had healed.

A year ago a team including the Wildlife Department’s director in charge of wildlife health Dr Tharaka Prasad, Dr Chandana Jayasinghe and Isuru Hewa Kottage had carried out several operations to treat the tusker.

The tusker had been treated for the last time at Galgoda wewa area in Andiyagala. Since then it was not sighted for a year.
