Sumathi Dharmawardena promoted as Additional Solicitor General of AGD

Senior Deputy Solicitor General (SDSG) Sumathi Dharmawardena, who was instrumental in preparing the proposed match-fixing Law, has been promoted Additional Solicitor General (ASG) of the Attorney General’s Department.

He is a member of the Appeal Board of the Sri Lanka Anti-Doping Agency. In addition, he advises the Ministry of Sports with regard to Legal matters, including drafting new legislation to prevent corruption and match-fixing in Sports.

Having joined the AG’s Department in 1994, SDSG Dharmawardena was the Legal Consultant to the Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka from 2002-2009, and drafted the Interconnection Regulations and assisted the Regulatory process with regard to liberalization of International Gateway in Sri Lanka in 2003.

Mr. Dharmawardena is the Supervisor of Telecommunication Law, Information Technology and Air Law at the AG’s Department, and contributed in drafting IT Laws and Telecommunication Regulations in Sri Lanka.

ASG Dharmawardena had his education at DS Senanayake College, Colombo, from 1974-1986. He has a Master of Laws (LLM) from the National University of Singapore. He was appointed Adjudicator of the Kuala Lumpur International Centre for Arbitration (KLICA), Malaysia. In addition, he studied Sports Arbitration at KLICA.

On February 21, 2019, the Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration of China appointed ASG Dharmawardena to its Panel of Arbitrators.

ASG Dharmawardena was also the President of the DS Senanayake College Old Boys’ Association and founder President of the Sri Lanka-China Buddhist Friendship Association.
