International Symposium on ‘Water & Air Pollution

The Postgraduate Institute of Science (PGIS) of the University of Peradeniya (UoP), and the National Chung Hsing University (NCHU), Taiwan, held an International Symposium on ‘Water & Air Pollution: Recent Advances in Research’, on March 29-30 at the UoP’s Faculty of Science.

The symposium was held after having identified the significance of the investigation of pollution levels in the environment and novel research on possible remedial measures.  UoP Vice-Chancellor Prof Upul B. Dissanayake was the Chief Guest.

The Keynote address on “Environmental Challenges in Sri Lanka” was delivered by Research Professor of the National Institute of Fundamental Studies, Prof Rohan Weerasooriya along with speeches from both Taiwanese and Sri Lankan experts.

More than 50 Oral and Poster presentations were made under 4 main themes- Air Pollution & Atmospheric Circulation, Fate of Pesticides in the Environment & Pesticide Pollution, Pollution in Freshwater & Marine Systems and Remedial Measures for Water & Air Pollution Issues, by experts from Brunei Darussalam, China, Japan, Taiwan and Thailand.

The Symposium was concluded with a Panel Discussion to conduct future programmes on Water & Air Pollution issues.
