The tenth inaugural Professorial Lecture by Prof. Hema Pathirana, the Dean of the College of Chemical Sciences took place on the 24th of January 2019 at the PPGL Siriwardena Auditorium. The lecture was a wealth of information on the academic endeavors of Prof. Pathirana, exploring the characterization of thin film semiconductors, developing degradation methods for persistent pesticides, production of fish oil and bio-diesel from solid waste, and many other areas of investigation.

The information on these interesting areas of Chemistry had a profound effect on the students, who are sure to be inspired by the great depths at which the investigations of such nature have taken. The key to any scientific breakthrough is the effective use of the already available understandings as tools to pave a way towards further exploration of unknown areas.

Perhaps one day we will live in a world where the solutions to some of our currently most intellectually challenging problems, like solid waste management and cost effective computing would be solved, but that would only be through the tireless efforts of the great academics that bear the torch of knowledge to reach ever greater heights.
