You don’t wait for the opportunity to present itself, you always prepare in advance. Life after school can be a shocking change from the sheltered world of the classroom. To help students navigate smoothly into the world of adulthood, the Modern Learning Studio is conducting a workshop titled ‘SPARK’ on December 19 and 20. The impressive panel of speakers includes Champion Speaker –Dananjaya Hettiarachchi and other young leaders in the startup, corporate, educational and even sports fields.

Here are some of the issues the workshop will focus on:

Making decisions: Everything is impacted by the decisions you make.Decision making is about being logical and illogical at the same time. You have to weigh the pros and cons… but also listen to your gut. Information overload can be just as misleading as a hunch in some cases.Instead try narrowingyour options logically and decide based on your inner voice.

Stand up to bullies: In your professional life there will be people who mistreat and harass you – and on no account should this be tolerated.

Remember a bully will only challenge you if you show weakness; never leave room for such behaviour to affect your self-esteem.

Communicate confidently: Communication is not just about what you say, but how you say it. All effective leaders are able to speak in a manner that connects with their audience. A loud voice and high flown words does not make you a good communicator.

Know your weaknesses: Having a growth mindset means you understand your weaknesses. No one is perfect, even a CEO has aspects he/she must improve in. Having a reality check about what you can and cannot do is healthy and it pays to get people’s honest constructive feedback from time to time.

Experience first:Having only a good education or background does not automatically entitle you to a high salary unless it is backed by experience.Understand that no task is ever beneath you. Learn to first build your capabilities before your bank balance; otherwise you will peak too fast too soon.

Be disciplined: Discipline starts with the mind. It is about being organized with your time, resources and conduct. Being mentally and physically disciplined is a vital life skill that will see you through stressful times.

Think solutions not problems: Talking about problems is a waste of time and helps no one to move forward.Even when a challenge comes up – think positive. No one likes to hear about issues, instead identify and discuss possible solutions.
