Former Minister Mangala Samaraweera paying tribute to former United States President George H.W. Bush, who passed away yesterday, recalled with gratitude his role in assisting Sri Lanka during its recovery from the 2004 tsunami.

“As America mourns the loss of former President George H.W. Bush, we recall with gratitude his visit to Sri Lanka following the December 2004 tsunami. He shared our sorrow and gave us the strength to recover and rebuild,” Mr. Samaraweera said in a message on Twitter.

George Bush Sr. accompanied by another former US President, Bill Clinton, visited Sri Lanka in February 2005 at the request of George W. Bush, his son, who was then U.S. President, as part of a private sector fundraising for relief and reconstruction in countries affected by the Indian Ocean tsunami.
George Bush passed away yesterday at the age of 94.
