Bags full of goodness

A 33-year-old mother of two young children, Vraîe Cally Balthazaar launched Cally Reusable Bags two months ago. Each set comes with one storage bag, seven produce bags, and two large tote bags. With Sri Lankan vegetables and fruits illustrating the front of the cover bag, the package makes a handy and eco-friendly gift.

The biodegradable bags have been designed to be a complete substitute for polythene bags – they are strong and won’t fall apart even when you load them with products.

The bag costs Rs. 1850 if bought from Cally Reusable Bags directly and can be used for up to 10 years depending on the wear and tear. The bag will shrink a little bit after washing, but the bag sizing was created with that in mind, so its utility value is unaffected. Especially designed for supermarket shoppers, the bags can be used to carry sugar, grain, and rice as well as other products such as fruits and vegetables.

After the garbage crisis at Meethotamulla, Vraîe was struck by a realization that the garbage collected at the dump was partly hers. Seeing the piles of plastic that she would bring home after shopping in the supermarket, she realized she too was personally liable for the garbage at the dump, and since then, she has tried to minimize what she brings into her own home.

After seeing a synthetic bag that could be folded into a pouch as well as not being able to find a biodegradable bag in the market anywhere, Vraîe decided to start Cally Reusable Bags and is enthusiastic about her progression as a small business owner.

“I don’t know if everyone can accommodate a zero waste lifestyle. Rather I believe that you can just be a conscientious shopper and focus on the change you can make as an individual,” Vraîe explains the philosophy behind Cally Reusable Bags.

You too can reduce your plastic output by purchasing a set of biodegradable reusable bags by calling Vraîe on +94777138182 or visiting her website http://www.cally.lk/ or her Instagram page https://www.instagram.com/cally_reusable_bags/.
