The Government took a policy decision in March 2016 to establish the Faculty of Medicine at UoW based at the Kurunegala General Hospital which has seen significant development recently, and the Kuliyapitiya Base Hospital, which is a Grade A hospital. An allocation of Rs 3,230 million has been provided to purchase the land, construct the buildings and purchase the equipment.

The Faculty is situated on a 28-acre plot called ‘Mahanugalandawaththa’ located within the Kuliyapitiya Municipal Limits on the Kuliyapitiya-Kurunegala road. The Medical Faculty complex consists of lecture halls, clinical, pre-clinical and post clinical buildings, conference halls, libraries, community health center, buildings for common amenities, residential buildings for the staff, playgrounds, main administrative buildings etc.

The floor area of the building is approximately 49,912 sq.ft. A hostel to house 400 students is also part of the project, which will fulfil the hostel requirement of the students.
